Welham Studios
Designed and built by Mark Merer in 2009, Welham Studios is the home and working studio of artists Mark Merer and Lucy Glendinning. It sits in two acres of Somerset countryside, with wide views across the valley in a quiet and peaceful location. The building has been recognised for its architectural character, featured in ArchDaily, Dezeen and several publications including Architects at Home.
As the studios continue to evolve, Welham Studios is developing workshops and courses led by resident and associated artists.
Mark Merer
Mark is an artist working at the intersection of landscape, sculpture, and architecture. His practice explores how we inhabit land, how form emerges over time, and how material, environment, and human activity shape one another.
Trained as a sculptor, Mark worked as part of a public art team on the North East regeneration, developing a career that spans sculpture, public art, building design, and land art. He has contributed to major regeneration schemes in Manchester and completed several public commissions, including works for Unilever and large landscape projects for Sustrans. He exhibited at the 2016 Architectural Venice Biennale and has received the Stansel Award for buildings, as well as Landscape Institute Awards, a Red Rose Award, and Gulbenkian funding through collaborative projects.
His work has been featured in numerous publications, exhibitions, talks, and panel discussions. Mark is a senior advisor for City Space Architecture.
Lucy Glendinning
Lucy is a sculptor and installation artist represented by GSA Gallery (Stockholm) and Galerie Da‑End (Paris). She has exhibited widely across Europe, as well as in the USA and Asia.
Lucy has completed several public commissions, including a memorial to Francis Crick in Northampton. Her work has received multiple awards, including Civic Trust Awards, Landscape Institute Awards, and Gulbenkian funding.
She has lectured at the University of the West of England on Art in a Social Context and has recently taught Fine Art at Weymouth College. After leaving college, Lucy worked as a mould maker for Ken Cook’s foundry. In 2024 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors.
